If you want to go big game fishing in New Zealand you are going to need a boat to take you into the waters where the fish are large, fighting and so good to snare.

Chartering a boat with friends or colleagues is a fun and cost effective method to ensure that even if the fish aren’t out the day you are on the water you’ll still have a day to remember (and a crew of mates with who to share your story about the one who got away!) Chartering a boat is a relatively simple process, and can make the day very simple to organise. If you select the right vessel they’ll be able to arrange everything from the food and alcohol on board, to all your fishing gear and bait. The crew can arrange all the technical side of manoeuvring the boat and you can focus on relaxing, and holding onto those fishing rods.

If you want a real kiwi experience the catered food can include a barbecue and some beers to wash it down with. If you prefer to cater all the food and drink yourself be aware that many boats charge a per head self catered fee to allow for that. Getting the crew to arrange it ensures nothing gets accidentally left behind onshore.

If you want to make a bit of a trip of it, ask if the boat you want to hire can be taken out overnight or for several days. The crew will know some of the more successful spots and can take you to experience some of the best big game fishing spots where others are currently experiencing an oceanic bounty. A fisherman is, after all, often only as good as the fishing spot they are visiting.

The more popular destinations for big game fishing out of Auckland are often in the Bay of Islands, out of Tutukaka, further north and Great Barrier Island. Many of these can be experienced on either a day or overnight trip, though of course there is always an option to extend it a little longer if you desire.
